Reflexology, or Zone Therapy, is the practice of stimulating points on the feet to encourage beneficial effects within other parts of the body, and to promote overall improved health. The foot can be divided up into reflex zones corresponding to the energy zones in the body. Every organ can be found represented on the feet as they mirror the entire body. Reflexology can be carried out on the face, ears, hands or feet, but it is traditionally done on the feet as imbalances in the body show up better in the feet, due to the fact that they have about 7000 nerve endings.
The treatment starts with the client removing their footwear and the therapist warming up the feet as in a massage, then working on the reflex points of each foot in turn. These reflex points correspond to different parts of the body and are similar to the acupuncture points. Using pressure applied by the thumbs and fingers the therapist stimulates the body’s nervous and energy systems in a totally non-evasive way. Patterns of stress in other parts of the body are broken up and, during the detoxification process, are eliminated from the body. Reflexology itself is not a foot massage but the therapy does end with a relaxing foot and leg massage, with cream or lotion being applied.
